Millions of eggs imported from Spain are contaminated with salmonella.
A survey found that more than one in eight boxes are carrying the bug, which can cause serious food poisoning and even death.
Free range egg fraud - they came from battery hens
The discovery follows a number of major food poisoning outbreaks linked to imports.
Two years ago, 15 Britons died and 6,000 were struck down with severe salmonella poisoning traced to cheap Spanish eggs.
The UK imports an estimated 25million eggs from Spain each year. If the latest figures are accurate, more than three million may be carrying the bug.
The Government's Food Standards Agency, which commissioned the study, called the proportion of contaminated eggs ' uncomfortably high'.
The rate of 13.3 per cent compares highly unfavourably with around 0.3 per cent for eggs from British farms
